About Theepana’s Training and Credentials
I am a Registered Psychotherapist (Qualifying) with the CRPO. I hold a BSc from the University of Toronto in Psychology and Sociology, a Postgraduate Certificate in Addictions and Mental Health from Durham College, and a MA in Counselling Psychology from Yorkville University.
About Theepana
I am a dedicated therapist who embraces a client-centred and holistic approach to therapy. I believe healing begins with feeling truly seen and heard, and I strive to create a warm, safe, and judgment-free space where you can share your story without fear. Every individual is unique, shaped by their experiences, relationships, and the challenges they have faced. My role is to walk alongside you on your journey, offering support, insight, and encouragement as you navigate through life’s complexities.
Equipped with a deep understanding of trauma, addiction, and the impact of systemic issues, I draw from various therapeutic modalities to tailor therapy to your needs. Through my experiences working on the frontlines of crises, including with individuals facing severe and persistent mental health concerns, displacement, and societal reintegration, I have learned the importance of culturally sensitive, compassionate, and empowering therapy. Thus, I am committed to fostering a collaborative and non-judgmental therapeutic alliance, where you are not just a client, but the expert in your own life. Together, we will explore your story, redefine challenges as opportunities for growth, and build resilience so that you can move toward healing and self-discovery.
I know how difficult it can be to open up about your struggles; however, healing happens in connection, and I will work collaboratively with you to explore your experiences at a pace that feels right for you. I use a strength-based approach to help you regain control and find meaning, working through concerns including anxiety, depression, relationship challenges, and personal growth. Specializing in modalities like CBT, EFT, and psychodynamic therapy, I will help you to navigate challenging emotions, foster self-awareness, and break unhelpful patterns.
Reaching out for support can feel overwhelming, but you do not need to navigate this journey alone. If you have any questions, or are curious about how we might work together or how I do therapy, please do not hesitate to reach out. You can also book a session or a free 15-minute phone consultation with me, using the links on this page.
Theepana’s Story
My path to becoming a therapist is deeply personal. My parents immigrated from Sri Lanka, fleeing the trauma of war. Growing up, I witnessed the impact of their experiences and how trauma shaped their lives in ways that were never spoken about. This early exposure to the lasting effects of displacement and war ignited my passion for understanding trauma and supporting those navigating its impact.
This desire led me to frontline crisis work, where I helped individuals facing severe and persistent mental health challenges. When I learned about the 2016 wildfires in Fort McMurray, I made the choice to pack my bags and relocate, determined to support individuals facing loss, displacement, and uncertainty. It was a life-changing experience for which I am deeply grateful, shaping my commitment to helping others through crisis and recovery. A significant part of my work involved connecting people to crisis resources, yet I found myself wanting to do more than just provide immediate support—I wanted to be a larger part of their journey toward recovery and healing.
Therapy allows me to do just that; my experiences have given me a deep understanding of resilience, trauma, and the need for culturally sensitive care. Now, as a therapist, I create a safe and compassionate space for others to share their stories, process their pain, and move toward healing on their own terms.
